Training people for an industry and then wishing them luck at the door never made sense to us. So we built the missing piece: the MNCC Job Board, a free platform at mncannabiscollege.org/jobs where Minnesota cannabis employers and job seekers find each other directly.

Here's how to get real value from it, on both sides of the hiring table.

For job seekers

Browse before you're "ready." The board's quiet superpower is market intelligence. Even months before you apply anywhere, postings tell you what roles actually exist, what skills employers name, what shifts look like, and which companies are growing. Ten minutes of browsing beats hours of guessing about what the industry wants.

Read postings like a translator. Cannabis job listings reward close reading. "Compliance-focused environment" means ID checks and documentation will be a daily rhythm, mention your reliability and attention to detail. "Fast-paced" means weekend rushes, mention you've handled retail crunch before. Every phrase in a posting is a hint about what to emphasize in your application.

Apply with the industry in mind, not just the job. Minnesota's cannabis community is small and connected. Hiring managers move between companies; today's "not quite" can become next quarter's "we have an opening." Professionalism in every application compounds. (This cuts the other way too: a sloppy application travels.)

Set a rhythm. New roles post regularly as the industry grows. A weekly check-in habit, same day, ten minutes, beats sporadic bingeing, because early applicants get read when hiring is moving fast.

If you're an MNCC graduate, say so. Employers who post with us increasingly know what retail and cultivation graduates arrive knowing, compliance culture, product or plant fundamentals, professional habits. Your credential is context; use it in the first lines of your application, not the last.

For employers

Post the real job. The best-performing listings we see are honest ones: actual responsibilities, actual schedule, actual wage or range. Candidates in this industry talk to each other, and postings that match reality build employer reputations that make every future hire easier.

Name the skills, not just the title. "Budtender" tells a candidate the role; "comfortable educating first-time customers, meticulous about ID verification and purchase limits" tells the right candidate to apply. Specific postings filter better than vague ones.

Consider the pipeline, not just the vacancy. Employers who use the board consistently, not just in emergencies, build candidate flow. And employers who want a deeper bench can go one step further: partnership with our training programs puts you in front of cohorts of trained, credentialed candidates before they even hit the open market. (We'd love that conversation: [email protected].)

Remember what free costs elsewhere. Industry-specific hiring platforms and general job sites charge real money per posting or per hire. Ours doesn't, because our nonprofit mission, education as repair, building pathways into this industry for the communities most affected by prohibition, is directly served every single time a Minnesota employer meets a Minnesota candidate. Your posting advances the mission. That's the whole business model.

Why a nonprofit runs a job board at all

It's worth saying plainly: the job board exists because training without placement is half a promise.

Minnesota Cannabis College trains people, nearly 50 enrollees in our first retail cohort alone, with cultivation and manufacturing tracks expanding the pipeline. But a certificate's value is realized at the moment of hire, and hiring infrastructure in a brand-new industry is thin. Big national job sites bury cannabis roles; word-of-mouth favors the already-connected, which is precisely the dynamic an equity-driven organization exists to disrupt.

A free, statewide, cannabis-specific job board levels that ground. The candidate with no industry connections sees the same openings, at the same moment, as everyone else. For an organization whose entire framework is repair, that's not a side project. That's the point.
