Every organization has a phrase it returns to. Ours is three words long: education as repair.

It shows up in our grant applications, our classroom introductions, and our board meetings. But because we use it so often, we owe our community a plain explanation of what we actually mean by it, and what we don't.

Cannabis prohibition was not experienced equally in Minnesota. For decades, enforcement fell hardest on Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color, and on low-income neighborhoods across the state. The consequences weren't limited to arrests. A cannabis conviction could follow a person into every job application, housing search, student loan form, and custody hearing that came after it. Families absorbed those costs for generations.

Now Minnesota has a legal cannabis industry, one that is generating jobs, businesses, and wealth. The question that founded Minnesota Cannabis College is simple: who gets to participate in that industry, and who gets left watching from the outside?

Repair, in our framework, means building a real, practical bridge between the communities that carried the heaviest costs of prohibition and the opportunities of legalization. Not a symbolic bridge. Not a press release. A bridge made of curriculum, instructors, job connections, and credentials that employers actually recognize.

Student feedback

There are many valid approaches to cannabis equity — expungement clinics, licensing preferences, community reinvestment funds. We support that broader ecosystem. But we chose education as our lane for a specific reason: workforce readiness is the step where good intentions most often stall out.

A social equity license means little if the licensee can't hire trained staff. A commitment to equitable hiring means little if candidates from impacted communities haven't had access to industry-specific training. Education is the connective tissue. It's the thing that turns policy goals into actual paychecks.

That's why our programs are built as workforce training, not just cannabis appreciation. CannTrain, our retail track, prepares students for the realities of dispensary work — customer education, product knowledge, compliance culture, and professionalism under pressure. CanGrow, our cultivation track, takes students into the science and craft of growing cannabis at commercial standards. Each track is designed around a question we ask constantly: will this help someone get hired, keep the job, and grow in it?

One thing we've learned as an organization: equity language can become wallpaper. Everyone says it; the words stop meaning anything. So we try to hold ourselves to specifics.

Specific communities: we prioritize outreach to the neighborhoods and populations most affected by cannabis enforcement in Minnesota, and we build recruitment partnerships accordingly.

Specific outcomes: our first CannTrain cohort graduated nearly 50 students with a near-perfect completion rate. Completion matters to us as much as enrollment, because a program that people start but can't finish isn't repairing anything.

Specific access: our job board at mncannabiscollege.org/jobs is free for both employers and job seekers, because we don't believe the connection between training and employment should have a toll booth on it.

Specific accountability: as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we answer to a board, to our funders — including the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development and the Office of Cannabis Management — and most importantly to our students.

We want to be honest about the limits of our framework, too.

Education as repair does not mean we can undo the past. No certificate erases a record, restores lost years, or repays what prohibition took from families. We are not in the business of pretending otherwise.

It also doesn't mean cannabis education is only for people directly harmed by prohibition. Our classrooms are open, and we believe the industry is stronger when everyone in it understands this history. Repair is the priority that shapes our outreach, our partnerships, and our scholarship decisions — not a gate on the door.

And it doesn't mean the work is finished when a student graduates. Repair continues in hiring practices, in wages, in promotion pathways, in whether the industry that emerges in Minnesota looks like Minnesota. We push on those fronts through our employer partnerships and our public voice.

When we say education as repair, here is the full sentence we're compressing: We believe that practical, high-quality, science-grounded cannabis education, offered with intention to the communities most harmed by prohibition, is one of the most direct tools available for converting legalization into shared opportunity.

That belief is testable, and we intend to keep testing it. Every cohort that graduates, every alum who gets hired through our job board, every employer who comes back to us for their next round of hiring — those are the data points that tell us whether repair is actually happening or whether we're just saying words.

So far, the evidence encourages us. Nearly 50 graduates from our first CannTrain cohort. A growing cultivation track. A manufacturing track in development. A statewide network of employers, sponsors, and community partners who share the vision.

But we're early. Minnesota's cannabis industry is still taking shape, and the window to shape it equitably won't stay open forever. That urgency is why we exist — and why we'll keep returning, in everything we do, to those three words.
